Do you like renting games, lending them to a friend, or even borrowing them from a friend? No longer possible. Every Xbox One game you get must be registered to your Xbox live account to be played. After that point it will only work for you. No one else can use it unless they pay a fee. Essentially it works like this. You pick up a used Xbox One game from somewhere or someone, pop it into your console. The system verifies it’s been registered to your account. Uh-oh, it isn’t! In order to play it, you have to pay Microsoft a fee, which is currently slated to be full retail price. Doesn’t matter how scratched up it is or how cheap you got it at gamestop or from a friend. You aren’t just buying the physical copies anymore. You’re paying Microsoft for a LICENSE to be allowed to play that game.

It is worth mentioning Microsoft is exploring ways for you to trade in and resell your used games. This is rumored to mean that you can sell your digital license to play the game (registration) back to microsoft, likely for microsoft points. You can then trade in the game at gamespot for some cash if you like. Either way, as it currently stands, the new owner would still have to pay a fee on top of the price of actually buying the physical copy.

Is it worth mentioning that Microsoft if shafting Indie Developers as well? Where as on Playstation Network or (whatever the Wii has) Indie Developers can self publish their content easily. Playstation even encourages this. Microsoft however forces these Indie Devs to enter publishing deals with them to be allowed to market their content. You don’t go through them, you don’t get to sell what you developed.

I’m not quite done yet! Now, I’m sure you heard a lot about “TV TV TV TV SPORTS TV TV SPORTS SPORTS TV.” Yes, the Xbox is slated to be able to stream live tv, live sports, etc. So let me ask you this. You obviously already have something like cable or DirecTV. Do you really want to shell out hundreds of dollars more and pay a monthly subscription fee to have another television provider? Yes, I said hundreds of dollars, and I don’t mean the cost of the console. To view live TV from the Xbox you are required to purchase ANOTHER separate device for it to work. Why would you even consider shelling out more money for something you already have anyway? Even if you didn’t, DirecTV is cheaper. Or you could even subscribe you Hulu.com and watch live tv on your computer. FOR MUCH CHEAPER. You essentially have to buy another cable box if you don’t have one. And if you do… what do you need the Xbox One for?

So far we’ve discovered that the Xbox One is not really a gaming console, at least… not a consumer friendly gaming console. It’s being marketed as an all-in-one home entertainment system. Something to replace all of the other devices in your house. But there are drawbacks even to that. Put on your tin foil hats for this part folks. Take from it what you will, all I’ll say is… possibilities…

The Xbox One’s features will not function unless the Kinect is plugged in and active. This is not an optional piece anymore.

So imagine your Kinect piece breaks? Tough luck, no more Xbox for you. But you know what’s worse?

Pay attention, because this is important. The Kinect is always watching. Always listening. Even when the system is off.

Yes. One of the ways to turn the system on is to audibly say: “Xbox On” while the system is off. The Kinect, which is always on, hears you and turns it on. Now this might seem like a cool feature, but did you know Microsoft patented a feature that would allow the Kinect’s camera (It’s no longer just a sensor, but a camera) to spy on you for the MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America?) While they may not actually do this, it is actually possible for them to do this now. It has a camera, and a microphone. The Kinect is always on. It is ALWAYS listening, ALWAYS watching.

An idea has been tossed around that by using this feature, it will allows game developers and movie produces to set a limited amount of how many people can be allowed to view the entertainment. So as a hypothetical example, you and three friends are watching a movie, which is the maximum allowed. A fourth friend enters the room and the Kinect’s sensor registers the fourth individual. The movie stops and you a prompted to pay a fee so that the extra individual may also view the film. Again, that is NOT currently the case, but these are the ideas currently being tossed around with the system’s current capabilities.

Now, just two more things and I’ll be done here!

This isn’t really a good or bad thing, but it’s annoying. It also explains how they can prevent you from playing a used game if you didn’t pay their fee. Xbox one no longer plays games off the discs, you HAVE to install them to the hard-drive in order to play them. I believe PS3 also has you do this (on a number of games but not always it seems), except that PS3 isn’t trying to Nickle and Dime you at every corner. It also seems according to this article there is something related to the Online portion at the beginning of this post. The option is there for Developers to require the Xbox to always be online to play their particular game. Well, it seems PC gamers and console gamers have one thing in common now… DRM.

(At least pirates on PC can bypass DRM easily. Not an option for Consoles.)

And last but not least, another annoyance… Xbox One will not be compatible with any and all current headsets. Nope, companies will either have to make new headsets altogether specifically for the Xbox One, and they have to adhere to what Microsoft wants. Look forward to price gouging.

Oh, one more thing… If you have an Xbox 360, don’t get rid of it. Why? Well if you want to keep playing your old 360 games you’ll need it. The Xbox One isn’t backwards compatible. At all. Not only that, but President of Microsoft’s Xbox Division Don Mattrick insults the very notion of backwards compatibility! He calls it: “Backwards thinking.”

Paying for this supports greedy and anti-consumer business practices. Speak with your wallet, and pass up the Xbox One. No matter what games it might have that you want, even if they are exclusive. Do the right thing and make a statement. Refuse to be nickle and dimed like this. Refuse to be seen as a mindless consumer who will buy anything tossed to them.

We won’t know much else until after E3, but as it stands now, the PS4 or a decent gaming PC is the best way to go.

As an art director I often get asked, “what exactly is it that you do?”. I’m sure some envision a job filled with long lavish lunches with big name photographers and models, trips to exotic locales for shoots and of course, non-stop posh parties. In reality, my job consists of sorting out a million details on tight deadlines. Recently, Glow had the opportunity to do a cover shoot with Glee’s Naya Rivera in Los Angeles and I thought it would be a great opportunity to shed some light on what exactly my role as “art director” is all about.

We just got word that we landed Naya Rivera for our Summer cover! The Glow team is pumped! We have four weeks to pull this shoot together. First off, we need to do some research. What has Naya been doing? What has she been wearing at events and red carpets? We want to make sure we capture Naya in a way that shows her personality and style, but is appropriate for Glow.

Ready to roll! Heading out to LA one day early to take care of some loose ends that can only be done in person. I pick up the car rental and head to my hotel, The Standard, Hollywood Hotel. Wow, this place is hopping! Art show in the lobby, delish drinks by the pool, this is definitely the place where people “In the know” stay. Off for a meeting with the photographer to review the shoot details, then off to arrange catering. Vegan on set!

I finally arrive at our location. Most of the crew is here. Have a little catch up with the photographer Dove Shore and and then check in with Jo Baker (makeup artist) and Clyde Haygood (hair artist) to see if they have any questions. Next I’m introduced to Naya by her publicist. Our stylist Taylor Jacobson (you might know her from The Rachel Zoe Project) is hard at work prepping the wardrobe…her pull is amazing!

Prepping for a shoot is always longer than the actual shoot. The whole crew is ready and excited to get started. Naya is almost done with hair and makeup and the crew’s on standby. Once she is on set we do a few test shots and make a few minor adjustments. I’m keeping my eyes open for just the right shot. It comes down to such tiny details. The best angle, expression, lighting, hair. Once you get it you know it…it’s still such a thrill!

All the cameras are rolling. ET Canada is here as well to cover our shoot. The shots are looking amazing. We take a few and send them back to the office in Toronto to keep the peeps there in the loop. We’re able to get several shots in this location. One in particular is up on a very high ledge, my stomach is in knots! Naya has no problem hopping up there even with her crazy high shoes. I feel like there is a collective sigh of relief once she is finished and safely back on the ground. We get some killer shots, but the problem is that this light only lasts for a few minutes. What a great shoot. Now time to start working on our next one!

I love that there’s a blog called “this is white culture” that is solely devoted to bad things white people did, not their cultures at all. Even if they had been living in America at the time when slavery was legal they wouldn’t have been able to afford a slave; in fact they probably would have been working with them in the fields and treated about the same, since the first slaves in America were actually white serfs. But please, tell me more about how dirty my hands are because of circumstances surrounding my birth that I could not control and continue to treat me differently based on the color of my skin without actually knowing anything about my heritage, I’m sure that isn’t racist at all!

I think you missed the entire point of the post which is that

RACISM IN ANY FORM AGAINST ANY RACE AT ANY TIME IS NOT OKAY. MAKING GENERALIZATIONS ABOUT A PERSON BASED ON THE COLOR OF THEIR SKIN AT ANY TIME IS NOT OKAY.

If we really want America to move past seeing race first, WE have to move past seeing race first.

But the playing field isn’t even CLOSE to equal. You’re basically telling a guy with a knife in his stomach not to feel self-conscious about his knife wound scar. YOU’RE MISSING SOME STEPS IN BETWEEN HERE, FRIEND. The intention is fine, racism is bad. But acknowledging our differences is part of who we are as humans. We’re not going to just STOP ACKNOWLEDGING the fact that we’re different. We can see race and see those differences without using them to oppress one another. WE CAN AT LEAST BE AWARE THAT WE HAVE BEEN OPPRESSING ENTIRE CULTURES. If someone harassed you in high school, ten years later you don’t want to hear “let’s just try to forget that happened”, and that’s the opinion a lot of people have about the more oppressive parts of our history.

Take the “white culture vs black culture” thing. Most of the things that are negative aspects of “white culture” have been ADVANTAGEOUS to white people overall. However, instances of negative “black culture” cited above (gangs and crime records) are completely different because they are merely reflections of the oppressive situations POC have been put in BY INSTITUTIONALIZED RACISM.

There is NOTHING in American history done to white people that even comes close to the way we treated racial minorities. Absolutely NOTHING. So I don’t want to hear “but Lithuanians or “Irish immigraaants” or any of that bullshit. It took as little as three generations for those immigrants to overcome the differences and climb their social ladders and integrate into American society. But it’s 2013 and we’re still having the argument that their struggle is even comparable to the struggle of people we literally enslaved and legislatively referred to as “chattel”. THAT’S what I’m taking up, here. I can’t sit here and have that shit spoonfed to me because I know it’s wrong and entitled and ridiculous.

The point wasn’t to forget, it was to forgive and move on.

Every race has done horrible things to another at some point in time. That doesn’t mean that you just keep perpetuating the hatred from generation to generation, blaming those who have never done anything for the crimes of their ancestors. Treating anyone in a harmful way for things they can’t control is a terrible thing to do. That doesn’t mean that we sweep slavery or the genocide of the Native Americans under the rug, it means we talk about it in a way that doesn’t shame the people alive today or encourage hatred against them for something they had no part in and cannot control.

It is 2013, and it is time to stop the hatred of people—of any people, by any people—for things they cannot control. Yes, American society IS easier on white people, but they didn’t choose to BE white. By the grace of genetic mutation they got lucky, they got the easier setting; that doesn’t mean they still don’t have to work hard to be successful or that by virtue of not having the easy setting no amount of hard work from any other race will ever amount to anything. Privilege exists but it isn’t the end-all be-all of what one can do in society, and it doesn’t excuse prejudice toward people who have it.

I hate when people say stupid bullshit like “see past race.” It’s only beneficial to white people. Please stop trying to erase who I am.

You act as though white people and POC have anywhere near the same advantages in America. That’s false. That’s 100% false.

Just because slaves were freed before your ancestors got here doesn’t mean your ancestors didn’t benefit from the laws put in place to subdue and keep black people unequal.

This inequality still exists whether you want to believe it or not. White people still benefit and POC not trusting white folks KEEPS US ALIVE. We get killed in the streets unarmed because blackness is seen an an inherent threat where whiteness is not.

So POC who choose to use this space to bolster one another don’t need or deserve white folks like you coming into their space and telling them how wrong they are for feeling a certain way.

Why don’t you put yourself to good use and police other white people. That would be a much better use of your time.

But all that, for the vast majority of my life, STILL does not make it okay to generalize those groups because generalizing groups IS WRONG.

You tell me not to erase your culture and experiences AS YOU VEHEMENTLY TRY TO ERASE MINE.
